10 Needlepoint Canvases for Beginners

Bookmark this post for later and share with friends! I’m sharing some of my favorite needlepoint canvases for beginners. And while I simply can’t compile every single beginner canvas available, I’m hoping to give you a nice jumping off point with this post.

As I mentioned in my first needlepoint post, I had a hard time finding quality and up-to-date resources for needlepoint novices. I love the hobby so much and have enjoyed researching resources, but I also wanted to create a one-stop spot for all things needlepoint, here on Girl Wonder Life.

There are so many fabulous needlepoint designers. But, in my opinion, some are better for beginners than others. You’ll also recall, in my beginner’s guide to needlepoint post I discuss different canvas mesh sizes. Lower mesh counts, such as 13 & 14 are easier for beginners, rather than a higher count, such as 18 mesh. So let’s jump right in – here are 10 different ideas of needlepoint canvases for beginners.

10 Needlepoint Canvases for Beginners

I do want to preface this list by saying that the following list features canvases that I’ve personally stitched as a beginner needlepointer, ones that friends have stitched or ones that have been recommenced to me via various LNS. So without further ado, let’s jump into the list!

1. Chill pill by morgan julia designs

One of the first canvases I ever stitched! I love Morgan Julia Designs canvases, they’re modern and fun to stitch. This canvas is perfect for beginners, as it’s 13 count mesh. Unfortunately this canvas is super popular, so it’s hard to find, but sign up for the emails on the Morgan Julia Design’s website for restock alerts. Fibers I used: Vineyard Silk.

The third canvas I ever stitched, this little design is perfect for a beginner. My finished canvas is actually at the finisher right now to be finished as a fridge magnet. I always loved balloon dogs as a child, so this canvas had a bit of nostalgia for me. Fibers I used: Pepper Pot Silk.

3. Y Pattern Key Fob by Anne Fisher

One of the many canvases in my stash. This Goyard-esque pattern has been on my canvas wishlist for months. I’m dying for the clutch version, but figured I should try my hand at the key fob first, as it’s smaller and easier! I ordered mine from an LNS up North called The Wool and The Floss.

4. STRAWBERRIES BY THORN ALEXANDER

An easy to attack canvas in 13 mesh. Perfect for beginners because the color variations are at a minimum and the repetitive nature makes it easy to mindlessly stitch. Would be darling finished as a coaster.

Recently finished this canvas from my stash. Definitely an easy one, as I stuck with basketweave for the entire canvas. The shapes are easy to follow, and personally I knew I didn’t want to stitch a background, which meant less work! I plan on having this framed to hang on a wall in my kitchen nook. Fibers used: DMC.

Honestly, I feel like all the canvases by My Pink Sugar Life are great for beginners. They’re on the smaller side, which means they’re manageable and easy to tackle in a week or less. I’ve already stitched the American flag loafers, and plan to pull the bees out of my stash soon. 7. Christmas Sled by Anne Fisher

My needlepoint bestie, Mollie of @crystalcoastneedlepointer, suggested this Christmas sled canvas for beginners. I couldn’t agree more! It’s a charming design that’s simple enough for beginner stitchers. Plus, on needlepoint.com it’s sold as a kit, which includes all the fibers you’ll need to stitch the canvas PLUS a comprehensive stitch guide with diagrams to help you stitch with confidence. This kit is under $75!

A fun and easy stitch! Not too many colors or details, which makes this a great beginner canvas. There are actually a few different sweater options available, so you could totally start a little collection of these guys. How cute would they be made into a little garland?

Have a tennis player in your life? Or maybe you’re the tennis player? This canvas is at a great price point, plus you can snag the other two ( and the ) to make a cute set, that’s easy to stitch. Love the idea of them finished as a set of ornaments for a garland!

10. Literally can knot by Alice & Blue

A simple needlepoint canvas on 13 mesh. Only two colors, means stitching is a bit easier, with less fibers to keep track of. Basketweave is an easy stitch for this entire canvas. Find it kitted with the fibers you need here.
