Dressing Cohesively for Family Photos

And just like that, we’ve been married for two year! Time sure does fly when you’re having fun, right? Thought I’d share these shots we grabbed for a campaign a few months ago, and talk about dressing cohesively for family photos.

It’s not very often that I get Rick to dress up and pose for photos with me, and even more rare for the blog! When I have had the occasional blog campaign that requires him to be in photos, we usually game plan a bit in advanced on outfit ideas. Of course, there’s generally something we’re promoting, so I want the photos to look both aesthetically pleasing, but also something we can have for memories down the road.

I actually used photos from a campaign last year for Tecovas boots, on our Christmas cards! Definitely nailed two birds with one stone on those shots.

With all that being said, dressing cohesively for family photos can be a little tough. You don’t want to skirt on the ‘too-matchy’ line, but you do want to look like you didn’t come from completely separate occasions just to capture the shot. I like to draw from at least two colors that will carry through both our outfits. That way the eye catches both colors in each of our outfits and recognizes the subtle cohesion, but we’re still free to wear clothes in our family photos that fit our aesthetics.

For these photos, I drew from the following two colors: chocolate brown and beige. The chocolate brown ticking stripe on Rick’s plaid shirt is cohesive to the chocolate brown of my blouse, plus the khaki of Rick’s denim works with the beige of my suede skirt and heels. The combination of these two colors in one way or another in our outfits, works to subtly trick the eyes into seeing that our outfits work together in the photos.

I’ll definitely be printing out one of these shots and framing it for our home soon.
