A reoccurring question I receive on the topic of needlepoint is my recommendation for beginner needlepoint canvases that I’ve personally stitched. Finally here to share with you a few beginner canvases from my collection.
Fortunately for y’all, I’ve tried really hard to take photos of all my canvases that I’ve stitched, along with their finished outcome. All of these beginner needlepoint canvases were stitched by me throughout the latter half of 2020 and the first two months of 2021. They’ve since made it to the finisher and back as beautiful heirloom pieces that I’ll cherish forever.

Below I’ll share four beginner needlepoint canvases (or similar available canvases you can purchase now) along with details about their finishing, too.
Four Beginner Needlepoint Canvases
Beach Bag Canvas by Hook & Harbor Co.
When I purchased this cute little beginner needlepoint canvas, it was sold already painted. The designer has since stopped selling it painted, and instead sells a beach bag bundle stitch chart that you can make yourself. Meaning, you download the stitch chart and chart the canvas on your own. Hook & Harbor Co. also sells blank pre-canvas in 13 and 18 mesh, so make sure you purchase that to properly chart your canvas.
I love having my needlepoint projects finished as magnets, because they’re useful and I look at them almost daily from our kitchen table. I hope to continue adding to my collection. Canvas finished by Christy Ragan Designs.
Union Jack Wellie by Tout le Monde Needlepoint
Such a fun canvas, that’s great for a beginner. This Union Jack Wellie canvas was stitched entirely in basketweave. Plus, a new or seasoned stitcher could take on this canvas – a quick mind-break stitch for those seasoned stitchers! There are a few different color options available, including hot pink and green!
I opted to have this canvas finished into an ornament by Christy Ragan Designs, and embroidery on the back with the year it was stitched.
Bow Sweater
Sadly the designer of this particular canvas is no longer in business, however there are some adorable sweater canvases available from KCN Designer’s Stitch-Its. Also found this cute ‘vintage ski’ sweater canvas on Etsy. A great beginner needlepoint canvas option, again totally stitched in basketweave.
I enjoyed stitching this canvas because there was enough color variation in which to keep my mind stimulated, but alternatively the sweater background was mindless, and allowed me to easily stitch while watching tv!
This canvas was again finished by Christy Ragan Designs, and backed with blue and white ticking stripe fabric, which I provided. I’m usually not a bow (on my finishes) type of person, but it needed a bow to match the one on the sweater!
Geometric Scissor Case canvas by Danae
This was one of those canvases that you see at a needlepoint store and know you don’t need it, but can’t resist purchasing it. I loved the colors and the geometric pattern with the fleur de lis. I’d venture to say that this was the most difficult stitch of all the beginner needlepoint canvases I’ve shared – simply because of the multiple thread color swaps. Once I made peace with myself that the back of the canvas wasn’t going to look simply perfect, I really enjoyed stitching it.
I’m not seeing this particular canvas readily available online, but I’m sure if your local needlepoint store sees a photo, they can order it for you!
I knew I’d never get the most use out of this canvas finished as a scissor case (I’m not a scissor case gal!), so I opted to have Christy Ragan Designs make these canvases into a duo of hanging ornaments. I have one of them hanging on our bedroom door knob (so I can see it year around!) and may hang the other on our Christmas tree or give it as a gift. Christy also handmade the hanging tassels and added beautiful beads for a unique finish!
